Yellow Belt
Yellow Belt — O-soto-gari and O-goshi
Learn the two foundational Kodokan throws: major outer reap and major hip throw.
### Kuzushi (Breaking Balance)
Every judo throw begins with kuzushi — disrupting the partner's balance. Without it, throws require force. With it, the partner falls with minimal effort.
### Kumi-kata (Gripping)
Standard right-handed grip:
- Right hand: lapel at chest height.
- Left hand: sleeve above the elbow.
Both grips control the partner's posture.
### O-soto-gari (Major Outer Reap)
1. Pull uke (partner) forward and to their right to break balance.
2. Step with your right foot beside uke's right foot.
3. Swing your right leg behind uke's right leg and reap it forward.
4. Drive your weight forward as you reap.
Key: the reap and the pull must happen simultaneously.
### O-goshi (Major Hip Throw)
1. Pull uke forward and to your right.
2. Step in deep with your right foot, pivoting so your hips are lower than uke's.
3. Wrap your right arm around uke's waist.
4. Load uke onto your hip and straighten your legs as you rotate.
5. Guide uke to the mat with your gripping arm.
Key: if your hips are not lower than uke's, the throw will fail.
### Nage-komi Drill
Practise each throw with a willing partner 20 times at slow speed. Focus on kuzushi and entry, not speed.
