White Belt — Ukemi: The Art of Falling
Learn to fall safely — the single most important skill in judo.
In judo, learning to fall safely (ukemi) is practised before any throw. A judoka who cannot fall will be injured; one who can fall can train for life.
### Why Ukemi First
Judo throws send a partner to the mat from height and speed. The falling person must absorb force across a large surface and protect the head.
### Mae-ukemi (Forward Roll)
1. Crouch, tuck the chin to the chest.
2. Roll along the outside edge of one arm, across the back, to the opposite hip.
3. Slap the mat with your arm (palm down, arm at 45°) as your back contacts it.
Drill: 20 rolls each side, starting from a low crouch, then standing height.
### Ushiro-ukemi (Backward Fall)
1. Squat, tuck chin, lower toward the mat.
2. Roll back, slap with both arms simultaneously.
3. Feet kick up — do NOT let the back of the head hit.
Drill: 20 times.
### Yoko-ukemi (Side Fall)
1. From standing, sweep one leg and drop to the side.
2. Slap the mat with the arm of the falling side.
3. Keep the opposite hand free.
### Dojo Etiquette
- Bow to the tatami before stepping on it.
- Address the instructor as Sensei.
- Never practise throws on a hard floor.
