Orange Belt — Newaza: Ground Fighting

Learn osaekomi (hold-downs) and transitioning from standing to ground.

## Orange Belt — Newaza: Ground Fighting

When a throw does not result in ippon (full point), the contest continues on the ground (newaza). Ground work is 50% of judo.

### Osaekomi-waza (Hold-Down Techniques)
A hold scores based on duration: 5s = yuko, 10s = waza-ari, 20s = ippon.

Kesa-gatame (Scarf Hold)
- Sit beside uke, facing the same direction.
- Wrap your arm around uke's neck (not a choke — just the shoulder).
- Secure uke's arm under your armpit.
- Wide base with your legs; one leg forward, one back.

Yoko-shiho-gatame (Side Four-Corner Hold)
- Lie perpendicular across uke's chest.
- One hand reaches through uke's legs to grip the belt.
- Other hand reaches under the head to grip the collar.
- Squeeze elbows together and press your weight downward.

### Escape from Kesa-gatame
1. Bridge your hips up sharply.
2. Roll toward the holder, creating space.
3. Insert your knee and recover guard.

### Transition Drill
After O-soto-gari, if uke does not land cleanly, follow down and apply kesa-gatame. Practise the full sequence: throw attempt → follow to ground → hold-down.
