Blue Belt — Chokes and Arm Locks (Shimewaza / Kansetsuwaza)

Learn Kodokan-approved chokes and the juji-gatame arm lock.

## Blue Belt — Chokes and Arm Locks

Chokes (shimewaza) and arm locks (kansetsuwaza) are submissions — the opponent taps to signal defeat. They are only permitted in adult competition.

### Hadaka-jime (Naked Strangle)
- From behind, wrap one arm around the throat.
- Bicep on one side, forearm on the other — the blade of the forearm presses the carotid.
- Clasp your hands and squeeze.

⚠️ Safety rule: release IMMEDIATELY when uke taps, or taps with their foot, or goes limp.

### Okuri-eri-jime (Sliding Lapel Strangle)
- From behind, reach over uke's shoulder with one hand to grip the far lapel deep.
- The other hand reaches under the arm to grip the near lapel.
- Cross your arms to apply pressure to both carotids.

### Juji-gatame (Cross Arm Lock)
1. Uke is on their back. Sit beside their arm, perpendicular.
2. Grip their wrist with both hands, arm between your thighs.
3. Lean back, press their elbow joint across your hip.
4. Slow, controlled pressure — stop the instant they tap.

### Safety and Ethics
Chokes render a person unconscious in 8–10 seconds if not released. Arm locks break joints. These techniques demand total respect and self-control. Never apply submissions to untrained partners or in anger.
