Purple Belt — Advanced Kata and Self-Defence Applications

Explore bunkai (kata application), Heian Sandan, and joint control basics.

## Purple Belt — Advanced Kata and Bunkai

Bunkai means 'analysis' — every movement in a kata has a practical application. At purple belt, you begin to decode kata.

### Heian Sandan (Kata 3)
- 20 movements with a notable double-block sequence.
- Introduces morote-uke (augmented block) and elbow strikes (empi-uchi).
- Kiai on movements 10 and 20.

### Bunkai Exercise: Gedan-barai
Common interpretation: your opponent grabs your wrist. The gedan-barai motion breaks the grip by rotating the arm sharply downward and outward.

### Elbow Strike (Empi-uchi)
The elbow is the hardest natural weapon. Horizontal empi targets the ribs; upward empi targets the jaw; rear empi covers a grab from behind.

### Naihanchi-dachi (Horse Stance)
Feet wider than shoulders, toes slightly inward, knees bent and pushed outward. Builds hip and thigh strength. Hold for 1–2 minutes as conditioning.

### Free Sparring Introduction (Jiyu Kumite)
With a trusted partner, use light contact freestyle sparring for two-minute rounds. Focus on using what you know — do not invent techniques. Tap to signal stop.
