Brown Belt
Brown Belt — Pre-Black Belt Refinement
Sharpen all previous techniques, learn Heian Godan, and prepare for black belt examination concepts.
The brown belt is the earth from which the black belt flower will grow. Every detail matters now.
### Heian Godan (Kata 5)
- 23 movements; the most dynamic of the five Heian kata.
- Includes a jump (tobi) with a cross-block, landing in a low crossing stance.
- Kiai on movements 12 and 23.
### Kime (Focus)
Perfect technique without kime lacks stopping power. Kime is the instantaneous tensing of all muscles at the moment of impact, then immediate relaxation. Practice by punching into a makiwara or heavy bag.
### Combination Sparring Drill
1. Jab (kizami-zuki) → gyaku-zuki → mae-geri
2. Age-uke → gyaku-zuki → mawashi-geri
3. Side-step → soto-uke → empi-uchi
### What Black Belt Really Means
Shodan (1st degree black belt) means 'beginning level'. You now know the alphabet of karate. Black belt is not mastery — it is the point where real learning begins.
### Self-Evaluation
Before any grading, honestly assess: Can you perform all five Heian kata without hesitation? Can you spar with younger coloured belts safely and effectively? Do you understand why each technique works? If yes to all three — you are ready.
