Yellow Belt
Yellow Belt — Ikkyo, Nikyo, Sankyo: The First Pins
Master the first three joint-control pins that form the core of Aikido.
These three techniques are applied to the arm and wrist to control, redirect, and pin an attacker.
### Ikkyo (First Teaching — Arm Pin)
Response to a shomen-uchi (overhead strike):
1. Step offline, blend with the attack direction.
2. Take control of the attacking wrist and the elbow.
3. Spiral the arm down and forward, taking uke's balance.
4. Pin uke face-down, arm extended, your knee at their shoulder.
Key principle: do not muscle the arm down — use your whole body weight moving forward.
### Nikyo (Second Teaching — Wrist Lock)
1. From ikkyo position, fold the wrist inward (palm faces uke's face).
2. Apply pressure by rotating your body, not squeezing with your hands.
3. Uke will tap or roll away to escape.
Sensitivity: a small adjustment changes the pain level dramatically. Practice with care.
### Sankyo (Third Teaching — Spiral Lock)
1. Take uke's wrist with a specific grip: your fingers wrap over their knuckles.
2. Rotate the wrist in a spiral upward.
3. The spiral travels through the wrist, elbow, and shoulder.
4. Guide uke to the ground and pin.
### Practice Rule
Always apply joint locks slowly and incrementally. Your partner taps to signal stop — release instantly and completely.
