Brown Belt
Brown Belt — Koshi-nage and Advanced Throws
Learn hip throws, kokyu-nage, and multiple-attacker principles.
### Koshi-nage (Hip Throw)
Aikido's hip throw differs from judo: rather than loading uke across a stationary hip, you:
1. Irimi deeply, turning your back to uke.
2. Lower your hips sharply below uke's centre.
3. Use hip extension and forward lean to throw uke.
The entry is circular — you are guiding uke's energy, not lifting them.
### Kokyu-nage (Breath Throw)
Kokyu-nage is a family of throws using whole-body extension rather than a specific joint lock. The name means 'breath throw' because the motion should be as effortless as breathing.
Basic kokyu-nage from wrist grab:
1. Allow uke to grab your wrist firmly.
2. Extend your arm forward and upward, as if reaching for something on a high shelf.
3. Your hips follow your arm — step forward, rotate.
4. Uke is swept off balance and thrown without your needing to grip them.
### Randori with Multiple Attackers
At brown belt, begin light randori with two partners alternating attacks. The goal is not to defeat them — it is to stay relaxed, keep moving, and not freeze when pressure increases.
### The Road to Shodan
Aikido's shodan grading tests:
- All kyu techniques on both sides.
- Randori with multiple attackers.
- Weapons basics.
- Ukemi quality — because how you receive technique shows how deeply you understand it.
