Green Belt — Irimi and Tenkan Footwork
Learn the two fundamental movement patterns that power all Aikido technique.
All aikido movement is built from two patterns: entering (irimi) and turning (tenkan). Mastering these eliminates the need for strength.
### Irimi (Entering)
Step forward and offline into the attacker's blind spot — typically to their side or behind.
- Do not step straight back (you lose ground).
- Do not step straight forward (you collide).
- Step to 45° or 90° off the attack line.
### Tenkan (Pivoting)
As uke grabs or attacks, pivot on your front foot 180°, taking uke's balance with you.
1. Uke grabs your wrist.
2. Step forward with the grabbed-side foot.
3. Pivot 180°, drawing uke's balance forward and around.
4. Uke's weight is now committed forward — apply a technique.
### Irimi-nage (Entering Throw)
1. Use irimi to step offline from a punch.
2. Blend your body alongside uke's.
3. Your arm sweeps under uke's chin and up — like a clothesline.
4. Uke's head goes back, off-balance — guide them to the mat.
### Tai-sabaki Drill
With a partner, practise only footwork:
- Partner grabs with both hands: respond with irimi OR tenkan.
- No techniques — only movement.
- Goal: feel when each footwork pattern fits the energy.
