Pre-Shodan — Integration and Flowing Practice

Integrate all techniques into flowing, connected practice and understand the Aikido philosophy.

## Pre-Shodan — Integration and Flowing Practice

### Musubi (Connection)
At advanced kyu level, individual techniques blur into continuous movement. This is musubi — the ability to stay connected to uke's energy through a technique and seamlessly into the next.

Drill: Three-technique flow
With a willing partner:
1. Uke grabs wrist — apply ikkyo.
2. As uke recovers, uke attacks with shomen-uchi — apply irimi-nage.
3. As uke recovers, uke grabs with both hands — apply kokyu-nage.
Repeat without stopping. The boundary between techniques disappears.

### Zanshin in Aikido
After pinning or throwing, maintain presence — do not look away, do not relax fully. Zanshin keeps you ready if the partner rises unexpectedly.

### O-Sensei's Philosophy
*"The purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body, and polish the spirit."*

Aikido is unusual in that O-Sensei explicitly said it is not primarily about fighting — it is about becoming a person who resolves conflict. The techniques train the body to move without resistance or aggression. Ideally, this extends to how you move through life.

### Preparing for Shodan
In the weeks before grading:
- Practise all techniques on both sides daily.
- Offer to be uke for senior students — quality ukemi is tested.
- Review all weapon suburi.
- Rest two days before the grading; arriving tired hurts more than skipping a session.

The belt colour changes. The learning does not stop.
